CURRENT NEWS!

Presidents Message Jan/08

Greetings to all, I’m Mark Pauling, your new chapter president. I think most of you know me, I’ve been hanging around this group for about 20 years now, for those that don’t, I will try to get to know as many of you guys as I can.

First things first, I want to thank Ross Wagner for being President for 4 years and keeping this club moving forward and helping to improve things for muskie fishing in Ohio. We had a real nice turnout for the Christmas party in December, and I think everyone had a good time. Ross had a drawing to give a rod and reel to one of the 2007 chapter officers, which was won by Tom Rankin.

I suspect most of you received a Muskie related gift for Christmas, there is a lot of really neat stuff out there. Margaret got me Larry Ramsells new book, A Compendium of Muskie fishing records and history, 2 volumes, about 700 pages each. I have a good start into these books and I can tell you that this is going to be some interesting reading.

Our chapter goals for 2008 and beyond will stay similar; continue the Mission of Muskies, Inc, keep our chapter focused on Ohio Muskies, the Kids fishing outing, and other events that promote Muskie fishing. Our club has a great leadership team in place and I will try to keep it going.

Remember this is your club, let me know any ideas you may have to help us grow and to keep things interesting, whether it be meeting topics, fund raising, outings, etc.

I want to congratulate Bill Lambert for winning the Club Tournament Championship in 2007, he put fish in the net in 3 of 4 tournaments, that was a great accomplishment. We will do the Club Champion for the 2008 tournaments again.

Jack Worline has scheduled the tournaments for prime times on Clearfork and Alum Creek lakes, put these dates on your calendar and plan to attend. Jack has some real nice prizes selected again for this year.

January is the time to make plans, schedule vacation dates, get those special baits and tackle you have been saving up for, and get ready for another season. I encourage you to attend the monthly meetings and I look forward to working with you.

Good luck to all of you in 2008.

Mark

Minutes of the January 8th 2008Meeting of the

Central Ohio Chapter of Muskie’s Inc.

Held at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café

Mark Pauling opened the meeting and welcomed all to the January meeting.  29 members were in attendance.  The first topic of the meeting was the announcement that the club will no longer be submitting scale samples during club tournaments for verification of their fish.  For boats with two fishermen, the second person will suffice as a witness.  For boats with one fisherman, the club decided after some discussion that we would print out cards that will need to be included in a digital photograph of their fish for verification.

The club then proceeded to deliberate the grand prize for the Club Tournament Champion.  The consensus was that the prize would be a high-quality jacket embroidered with the chapter emblem.  In the event that one person would be 2nd time winner, he or she will be offered a choice of gifts to select from.

All members are encouraged to update their personal information on the Muskies Inc website to ensure their addresses and phone numbers are up to date.  Doug Dible will attend the Spring Board Meeting of Muskies Inc April 3rd through April 5th, which will be hosted by the Titletown (Chapter #4) chapter of Muskies, Inc. It will be held at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center 2040 Airport Drive, Green Bay, WI.

Elmer Heyob gave a presentation of the new Musky Log, which is expected to be launched in March 2008.  By using the log to register all muskies caught as well as some basic information about the fish, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources expects to have much better data to evaluate the effectiveness of the stocking program.  He also gave a demonstration of how to use the log and explained several features available to club members.  For the time being, all fish will need to still be reported either to Margaret Pauling or to the MI web site to be recognized with our club.  Elmer also notified the group that officers of the other Ohio Chapters of Muskies Inc are expected to attend the Muskie Summit, which will again be conducted during the Ohio Muskie Show.  Video taken at the 2007 Youth Fishing Event will soon be available and the club plans to have the clip on display at the Ohio Muskie Show.

Mike Candella submitted the treasurer’s report.  The current balance for the club was discussed and compared with the balance at this time last year.  Cash deposits on hand are similar to the balance of a year ago, which is notable considering the club’s contribution to the Minnow Fund.  The balance will not be included in the notes going forward but will be readily available to members who attend the meetings.

Jack Worline provided the group with an update for this year’s tournament schedule.  This year the club will be hosting the Can Am tournament with Manny Farley helping to organize the event.  The club will be holding 50/50 raffles for the next five meetings with the proceeds to be used to cover expenses for the Can AM.  Ross Wagner suggested the club contact MI and take out a full-page ad in the monthly magazine to promote the event.  As the club is entitled to a ½ page ad at no charge, the cost of a full-page ad would not be overly expensive.  The dates for this year’s tournaments were announced as follows with the Russ Dodridge Tournament being moved up one week:

·       May 3rd & 4th Jon Fisher Memorial Tournament Clear Fork Reservoir

·       May 31st & June 1st Russ Dodridge Memorial Tournament Clear Fork

·       June 28th–29th Ray Demers Memorial Tournament Lake St. Clair

·       July 18 Nite Bite Tournament Alum Creek Reservoir

·       October 11th &12th Fall Shoot-Out Alum Creek Reservoir

Rob VanGorder updated the club on the upcoming annual banquet at Hoggy's Barn and Grille – Polaris 8740 Sancus Blvd 614-433-7447 www.hoggys.com on Saturday March 8th from 6pm –9pm.  Tickets will be available for purchase at the February meeting as well as at the Ohio Muskie show.  The cost is $20 per person ($10 for children under 12 yrs old) and we will need to have at least 40 attendees to have the banquet room at no charge.  The club discussed which plaques to purchase and from which vendors.

Rob also gave an update on the wish list for the ODNR stocking program in Ohio.  Our chapter has already purchased a 220v paddle wheel aerator and it is hoped that the other Ohio chapters of Muskies Inc will be able to purchase a second paddle wheel aerator, a minnow seine, and chemicals to be used by the hatchery.  As the club filled out the annual charter and mailed it in to MI, we may also be able to receive grant money from MI that may be used to help support the stocking program.

The meeting concluded with the usual lure raffle…

Subject:  Ontario's New Fishing Regulations In Place For January - Fishing Regulations Now Available
Two rods per angler are now legal when fishing from a boat on Lake St. Clair.  They didn’t extend the rule to either of the rivers.  Still one rod per angler in Ontario waters in the rivers.  Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and the rivers are now all zone 19.  No more late start for the Ontario Lake Erie muskie season

Fishing Tips Jan/08

I thought I would put together a recap of the 2007 fishing details on Alum Creek, Clearfork and St. Clair lakes, these are the favorite lakes our members fish. Maybe some of you can use this to help make plans for 2008. One of the first things you should take advantage of is the Lunge Log on the M.I. International website, there is a lot of info here. All the muskies entered by our chapter are available to be viewed on the online. Log in using your membership number, on the left side select “Lunge Log inquiries”, then select “NEW Lunge Report”. From there you can choose many options. If the fish is entered online, then it will be on the Lunge Log real soon. If the fish release entry form is mailed or faxed to Margaret, then there will be a delay of the info getting into the online Lunge Log.

There was a Lunker of the Month for all 12 months, that doesn’t happen very often. January is a tough month to get a legal muskie and James VanDyne caught a 43”er at Clearfork on 1-07-07. Decembers miserable weather didn’t stop Dick Moore from catching a 44” in Alum.

Alum Creek spillway put out some fish in late Feb and early March, Rob VanGorder and Brian Vinson each caught a legal Muskie the last day of February. Then Richard Moore and Cliff Honeycutt caught some in March and early April.

Clearfork didn’t get going much till mid-April, there were lots of sub-30”ers caught, but the legals were not cooperative early. Clearfork really picked up after mid-April with lots of nice Muskies caught. The weeds came up good and there was a great bucktail bite till the end of May. Then trolling Monster Shads, Tuff Shads and Sissons was good till hot weather slowed it down. 2007 was very typical for Clearfork, I’m glad to see Clearfork get back to the way it used to be.

Alum Creek finally turned on towards the end of May. Where are those darn April and early May Muskies hiding in Alum Creek anyway? That’s your assignment for 2008. Get out there and find them, we know they are there somewhere. Trolling the points fairly shallow was the pattern in late May, then you just had to troll deeper as the water temps came up. A variety of baits are on the fishlist, and then Lightning Shads were a favorite after the muskies moved out into deeper water.

St. Clair was another decent year, the numbers are still down but there are lots of big fish available for those who want to spend time searching and putting a pattern together. I had more zero fish days last year than I care to remember, but also when we hit a group of fish it was pretty wild at times. I believe my boat had at least 4 days with 10 fish or more. St. Clair remains a very good Muskie lake. Don’t let the VHS stories keep you from giving St. Clair a try sometime.

Fall fishing was pretty slow on Alum Creek and Clearfork, except for Dick Moore, who turned in a bunch of fish in September from Alum. There were a few scattered fish caught out of Clearfork and Alum in October-November.

October and early November was good on St. Clair, and then the weather turned bad for most everyone and everywhere. The season ended pretty early.

 Notice to members:

With warm weather coming soon I hope to see a bunch of muskies caught and the release forms sent in.  So now is a good time to review some of the rules of Muskies Inc. for muskie release forms, etc.

  1. Time limit on forms sent in. 30 days from the “date of the catch” to get the form to the release chairperson.  Then the release chairperson has 30 days to get the entry into the international.  This is set by the M.I. International Board.  If the entry is late, Central Ohio Chapter will still recognize the release and count it in our lists, etc, but the fish release can’t win any awards (like Lunker of the Month).
  2. Witness of the release.  Central Ohio Chapter doesn’t require a witness, but the International will require a witness to qualify for any International award.
  3. Submit release online to Muskies Inc. International.  I encourage you to send your releases into the International using the “online option”, but if you do, please send me an email with the number of fish, date caught, and form ID numbers.
  4. 50” and over releases.  If you submit a 50” plus release “online”, you still need to send (not fax) me an original release form filled out and signed by you and the witness, if you want it to count in the International list.
    Thanks,
    Margaret
